FRENCH CREEK MAIN CHANNEL & OFF CHANNEL HABITAT IMPROVEMENT & MONITORING

Project Summary: The construction phase of this project will include the installation of large wood material and gravel augmentation to enhance salmonid juvenile rearing and adult spawning habitat at four locations in the mainstem of French Creek, a tributary to the Scott River. In addition, a distributary channel will be constructed to decrease channel entrenchment and increase complexity.

The Scott River Watershed Council (SRWC) will be soliciting bids for the French Creek Habitat Enhancement Project on February 8, 2018. The objectives of this project are to: 1.) install unanchored large wood material and augment gravel and cobble at four locations along a 650 ft. reach of stream, 2.) construct a 350 ft. distributary channel and load it with large wood material, and 3.) prepare site for restoration of riparian vegetation along the distributary channel bank. The work consists of, but is not limited to, the following items: placing large wood material (~24) root wads along sections of stream bank by wedging materials between existing large trees rooted into the stream bank; large wood would consist of rootwads with boles 4 to 5 ft. in diameter and trunk DBH’s of 12-18 in., placing coarse gravel and small cobble to restore substrate suitable for spawning by target fish species across the streambed, placing materials at the inlet and outlet of constructed distributary channel to constrict flow, the excavation of off-channel sites for planting hardwood stem cuttings along the floodplain and the excavation of new distributary channel, furnishing and installing rock slope protection, remove ~450 ft. of fencing prior to placement of fill and reinstall after placement of fill, spoils disposal, site cleanup and restoration. The contractor will be required to comply with State and Federal permit conditions including erosion and sediment control measures throughout the duration of the project. Experience with in-stream restoration projects and compliance with similar permit conditions required. Preference given to those with experience working in Scott Valley.
